Esports Photography: Pre-Event Checklist

Being prepared for an event is about more than just making sure all your gear is packed. A little extra work before you hit the road can make your time at the event smoother and even improve your photos.

Esports is a young industry, so many of the things that are “solved problems” in other industries tend to crop up much more often here. For esports photographers that no-so-solved problem is image misuse. So for all the aspiring (and in many cases, established) esports content channels out there, here’s a quick and easy guide to finding and properly acquiring images for your esports content.
Favorite Faces of 2014 #8 - Evo’s Players
While the spectators were my last highlight, they wouldn’t have much to be excited about if it weren’t for the players. They play their heart out match after match … and in a bracket a deep as Evo’s every win is a milestone, every loss a step closer to defeat.
Favorite Faces of 2014 #7 - Evo’s Crowd
Seth Killian said it best at Evo 2013…
“It’s like you script it, but it writes itself. … Put amazing people in a room, have them duke it out, and what rises to the top is an incredible story.”
Pack thousands of die-hard fighting game fans from around the world into a ballroom and their energy multiplies into something much greater than the sum of its parts. It shows on every single face.
Favorite Faces of 2014 #6 - Progducto x D1
Perhaps the most recognizable faces – and voices – in the Smash scene, Prog and D1 have been at the forefront of the Smash Bros Melee resurgence over the last several years. 2014 saw them at Apex and Evo (Melee’s two biggest events to date), the return of Melee to MLG, and Nintendo’s own Smash Bros invitational. And while Prog has since retired from commentary, he remains as active as ever in the scene.
Favorite Face of 2014 #5 - OpTic Scump
MLG Anaheim is, so far, the one and only time I’ve shot a Call of Duty event. They’re an expressive bunch … and it’s especially noticeable when you’re hopping between shooting CoD and StarCraft. But Scump stood out … OpTic was having a great run, and he knew it. They eventually placed 2nd to EG in a close grand finals set.
Favorite Faces of 2014 #4 - SethSonic
Two El Fuerte players made Top 4 at Spring Fighter 2014. ‘Nuff said.
Favorite Faces of 2014 #3 - Flux vs Coach Steve Exhibition @ ECT 2014
At East Coast Throwdown, Flux and Coach Steve faced off in an hour-long grudge match coming down to a nailbiter finish, with Coach Steve winning 15-14. Most of the crowd seemed as emotionally invested in the outcome as the players themselves.
Coach Steve later went on to be awarded Most Improved Player at Evo 2014.
Favorite Faces of 2014 #2 - “Still the best in the world!”
Despite taking 2nd to PPMD in Smash Bros. Melee singles, Triforce took to the stage to remind everyone just how well M2K did at Apex overall.
Favorite Faces of 2014 #1 - Apex 2014 Salty Suite
If the main stage of a tournament is a boxing ring, the Apex Salty Suite was a veritable Colosseum. Spectators stacked to the walls in every direction, cheering for their favorite player with every hit. Egos bruised, money lost, all in the name of Smash.
